My New Favorite Notion – and a DUH! moment

My blog partner, Peggi, sent me an awesome squishie last week, filled with patterns, fabrics and do-dads. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that when I get a squishy the first thing I do is squeal, jump up and down and begin petting fabrics. However, when I opened this one the first thing that caught my eye was this:

wpid-Pen-Oiler-1024x1024-2011-11-14-19-00.jpg

It’s a pen-point needle oiler made by Commando. This baby is going to get a permanent home attached to the side of my Voyager midarm machine.  It was an immediate “DUH!” moment when I saw it. It’s a syringe filled with oil! Why didn’t I think of that?!?! The Voyager has a couple of holes on the side of the machine that have to be oiled regularly, and let me tell you, it’s a pain in the ass to do. I’ve been using the Zoom Spout Oiler for quite a while:

wpid-zoom-spout-2011-11-14-19-00.jpg

…and as you can see, it’s got a long spout that can be maneuvered almost anywhere. The only problem is you can’t tell how much is coming out when you squeeze the bottle – it’s very hard to just get a drop or two. You have to squeeze pretty hard just to get it to the top of the tube. With the  pen I’ve got much more control. And it’s refillable!!

Thanks Peg, for making one job much, much easier!

Pre-sashing isn’t always a good thing…..

I’m working on the charm square quilt for my niece, and am loving the way it looks. I am absolutely in love with the Needles & Wool flannel fabric line and must get more soon. However, all is not going well with this quilt.

I am a firm believer in pre-sashing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done sashing where the corner blocks just will not match up for me. Pre-sashing makes things a hundred times easier in that respect. When I started this quilt, it was going to be a straight square quilt.

wpid-Shelby-220x300-2011-11-13-14-41.jpg

And after a conversation with Peggi changed my mind to this:

wpid-Shelbyonpoint2-227x300-2011-11-13-14-41.jpg

I already had half of the squares pre-sashed, and couldn’t see a reason not to continue on. But once I finished, I realized what a mistake this was. In the next picture (sorry it’s a bit fuzzy) I’ve got all the diagonal rows sewn together. But now you can see my problem:

wpid-Aack-2011-11-13-14-41.jpg

So now you can see I need THREE different setting squares. And I suck at math. I get a headache just thinking about it. Peggi’s helping me, thank heavens. She’s a wiz at this kind of stuff. I’ve sent her my EQ file, even though I don’t know it will help. I only wish she were here. She could teach me SO much about triangles. I avoid them like the plague because of the math involved.

Lesson learned on this quilt: Do NOT pre-sash on-point quilts!!

wpid-Cindi-Signature-large-2011-11-13-14-41.png
Well, I think it’s too early to say that you shouldn’t have pre-sashed on this one.  I still think it was the right way to go, but I DO think it might have been too early to sew all the rows together.  You still need to add your triangles and sashing, and you’ll probably end up ripping about 2″ of the seams at the end of the rows so you can attach them.  The good news is I haven’t finished my Pom Pom de Paris quilt yet.  It’s exactly the same as your Needles & Wool quilt, and I’m at the same point you are – I need to add my setting triangles.  I’ll let you know how I did it – as soon as I figure it out, lol!

Charm Square Quilt

Well, it’s been a while and I’ve been remiss in posting. Thank goodness for my partner-in-quilting, Peggi, for keeping things going! Just got back from a whirlwind visit to Florence, Italy to see my niece, Kylee, who is doing a Fashion rotation there for a quarter through Kent State University in Ohio. It was amazing, although I did come home with a case of pneumonia. Yikes!

So, now that I’m better and things are getting back to normal, I figured I’d better start on the wedding quilt for another niece, Shelby, who is getting married on New Year’s Eve. She’s a nurse with the Army, and as of last week is stationed in Maryland and will work at the hospital there. She and Uriah are down-to-earth people who enjoy nature, so I thought I’d create a simple quilt from Moda’s Wool & Needle Flannels line.

wpid-woolneedlefq-2011-11-6-16-55.jpg

It’s a wonderful, soft line of flannels that look like plaids, but read as mostly solids.

I whipped out EQ and started designing something simple. I originally thought I’d do a straight square quilt with their names:

wpid-Shelby-752x1024-2011-11-6-16-55.jpg

However, Peggi was correct in telling me it looked like a scrabble board. I can always count on her to tell me the truth – she doesn’t want me to make a fool of myself (ummm, nor do I!). So I’ve happily taken her advice, stolen her idea and am now going to make it on-point and leave off the names. If I’ve got time (which I doubt), I’ll do tw0 corners of applique of leaves and maybe a flower or two. But neither Shelby nor Uriah remind me of “flower” kinda people.

wpid-Shelbyonpoint2-777x1024-2011-11-6-16-55.jpg

Yes, I like that much better!! Simple, clean and un-fussy. Warm nature colors for snuggling on cold evenings. Perfect.

I did find something odd with one of my charm packs. I actually had several squares that were larger than 5-inches! I pre-sash everything. Find it much easier than trying to match all those corners. I couldn’t figure out why my tan sashing pieces were shorter than the charm squares (and these squares weren’t zig-zagged). I put one on my cutting mat and…

wpid-photo-1024x764-2011-11-6-16-55.jpg

…lookie there. Almost an 1/8th of an inch longer! No wonder my sashings weren’t working. So I ended up trimming down about a dozen. Well, better too big than too small!

Peggi is being a dear and sending me more fabric, as my LQS’s here don’t carry this line and I need a bit more for the setting triangles now. Of course, I avoid triangles like the plague, so I’m sure I’ll be bugging her to death about how to cut these out!  Hopefully here in another couple of weeks I’ll have an actual quilt to show you. It seems like forever since I’ve finished (or even sewn) a quilt!

wpid-Cindi-Signature-large-2011-11-6-16-55.png
I’m glad you’re back – I missed  you!  I’m glad you caught the size discrepancy with the charms.  I can’t wait to see the finished quilt – those flannels are soooo yummy!  In fact, I just might steal that idea back and make my own on-point quilt!  It is flannel season, after all.

Balloon covers for Sierra Leone

Are these cool or what?!!?

wpid-22-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

These are NOT balls.  They’re fabric covered balloons!

wpid-61-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

Here’s the story behind this project.

wpid-sierra-leone-location-map-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

My sister-in-law, Janet, is returning to Sierra Leone next month.  She went a couple of years ago with some of her fellow church members.  This is her description of what they’re accomplishing, along with some pictures from her most recent trip:

“My church has adopted a village near Freetown,  Sierra Leone.

wpid-a-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

Our mission is to partner with the approximately 2500 people in our village area, Tissana, so they can learn skills to be self supporting.

wpid-i-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

We support the medical clinic;

the education system;

wpid-j-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

wpid-h-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

and we are teaching them farming skills.

wpid-e1-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

wpid-l-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

They have been crippled by years of hand outs and we are focused on giving them sustainable skills to change lives now and for future generations.”

wpid-k-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

I wanted to make some kind of contribution.  Last time Janet went, I sent a collection of bras & underwear with her.  This year I wanted to do something fun for the kids.   I’ve seen a couple of fabric-covered balloon tutorials floating around the internet and wondered if these “balls” might be just the thing I was looking for.  I picked up a package of balloons from the Dollar Store, shopped my stash for fun fabrics, and cranked a test ball out.

wpid-52-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

It was a hit with both my 10-year old son and his 45-going-on-12 year old father!  They kicked it, tossed it, whacked it, played soccer with it, put it through all kinds of crazy paces.  They were very good testers.  The fabric cover protects the balloon from popping, and the balloon is so lightweight that you can kick it into a television, houseplant, or window with no resulting damage, which made it ideal for some rambunctious and competitive indoor soccer games at my house.

wpid-42-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

The construction is simple; 6 side sections and a center bottom piece that has a buttonhole.  The buttonhole allows you to stick a (deflated) balloon inside, which you blow up, tie off, then cram the balloon’s umbilical under the fabric.  The balloon will eventually deflate over time.  I made the first ball 6 days ago.  It’s getting a little saggy, but is still rolling along.  Kind of like me, actually.  :P

wpid-32-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

Originally I was concerned about toddlers choking on a deflated balloon, but after playing with them for a while, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem.  When the balloon deflates, it’s stuck inside the fabric, and is pretty difficult for little fingers to fish it out of that buttonhole.

I ran the idea past Janet last weekend.  I wanted to know what she thought, since she’s been to Sierra Leone already.  She gave it a thumbs-up. The children don’t have a lot of balls to play with because they have no way of inflating them.

Another consideration was space.  Janet has to pack a lot of stuff to take with her, and this project was great for space management.  The fabric shells will ship very flat inside a Space Bag, along with several packages of balloons.  Extra balloons will be given to the pastor as replacements and rewards.

wpid-g-2011-10-27-18-25.jpg

I only wish I could see the children’s faces when they play.  Hopefully Janet will be able to take pictures!

wpid-large-sig-2011-10-27-18-25.png

p.s.  How do the women DO this?!!?!?!?

Second-fastest quilt in the west

Remember this quilt top?

wpid-bali-pops-quilt-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

No?  Probably because I made it over a year ago.  I didn’t like it much then, and I still don’t like it now.  So, I decided to make a few changes.

wpid-21-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

Well.  That’s a bit more interesting.

wpid-11-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

Looks kind of pixelated, doesn’t it?

wpid-31-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

Check this out – one of the fabrics I used for the Little Wallet matches perfectly!  It’s pretty busy, though.  What if I added some solids to cool it off and tone it down a bit?

wpid-41-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

Meh.  Too light.

wpid-51-2011-10-21-04-24.jpg

Hmph.  I like this a tiny bit better, but it still doesn’t sing to me.  Maybe this fabric won’t work at all with this quilt.

I guess I’ll have to finish re-assembling it before I decide on borders.

Little Wallet

While I was at Quilt Expo in Portland last month, I spotted this cute pattern.

wpid-1-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

Valori Wells Little Wallet

It was only $3.00, so I bought it.

Today was one of those “meh” days.  You know, a day when you’re feeling kind of blue, but you’re not sure why?  And you just can’t get motivated to work on anything, and nothing looks fun?  So, hoping to shake this funk, I dug the pattern out, shopped the stash, and whipped up a wallet.

wpid-4-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

How cute is that???

wpid-5-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

Oh my gosh.  Adorable!  Yes, I DID make it so the critters were watching me.  How could I not?

It has 3 pockets and is the perfect size for credit cards, store discount cards, gift cards, insurance cards,  mad money, business cards, all that good stuff.

Okay, hang on, I gotta make another one.

wpid-2-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

Squeal!  LOVE this!  Pink and black, with a touch of green.  Snazzy and feminine.  Okay, the blue funk is slowly dissipating…

wpid-3-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

They’re like potato chips – I can’t stop.

wpid-6-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

I’ve made 5 of them.  So far, that is.  Don’t you just love the chicks-n-eggs wallet?  And how about that gorgeous Kaffe-style blue & green one on the bottom?

wpid-8-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

I had envisioned giving them as gifts at Christmas, loaded with cash and gift cards.  But I don’t know how I’ll be able to part with them, they’re so pretty!  I can’t possibly pick a favorite!

wpid-10-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

But I CAN pick more fabrics to make even more wallets from!

wpid-9-2011-10-17-20-32.jpg

This flower print has been in my stash for years.  I LOVE it, and this little swatch is all that’s left of it.  I’ve been hoarding it to use in a special project somewhere.  It will be perfect in a little wallet,  and THIS one I’ll definitely keep for myself!

wpid-large-sig-2011-10-17-20-32.png

p.s.  If you’d like a pattern, you can get them from Valori’s website.  No affiliation, she has no idea who I am!

The Girl’s Club Banner

wpid-bqnn34-728x1024-2011-09-17-15-02.jpg

This is The Girl’s Club banner (last names have been smudged in the pic!). I’m in a club of eight girls who meet at least once a year, spending a 4-day weekend doing absolutely nothing but drinking, talking and laughing. I guess we may do a few other things if we get bored, but we rarely do. I made this a few years ago, and it’s one of the first appliques I ever did. And boy can you tell. The flowers around the border should have been lined so the border didn’t show through. It was the first time I had done free-hand quilting on my DSM. And boy can you tell. Big swirls, tiny swirls and absolutely no consistency. But, the girls love it. We hang it inside the door of whatever cabin or cottage we’ve rented for the weekend, and it hangs there until we go home.

I don’t remember where I got the pattern. I saw the pattern for the flowers in a magazine or online somewhere, it was of the flowers in a vase, I think. If anyone knows the name of it I’ll gladly give the flowers credit! I made each flower, and then spent about 7 hours trying to figure out how to use the embroidery section of my ridiculously-overpriced-more-than-I’ll-ever-need-or-use-so-why-did-I-buy-it sewing machine. After embroidering everyone’s name at least 4 times to get the size correct, I used the names as the centers of the flowers (once again, last name is smudged):

wpid-flowercindi-2011-09-17-15-02.jpg

Cute, eh? I even put our club inception date on a leaf at the very bottom of the banner:

wpid-Est-300x248-2011-09-17-15-02.jpg

PS: I figured I’d better post SOMETHING on this blog, seeing as how I posted last in July. Normally I have no life. This summer, I’ve not found time to even walk down to the sewing room. Went down there today to steam out the banner, and found an actual cobweb on my sewing machine! :o And due to commitments that will keep me away from home on weekends until the end of October, it looks like more cobwebs are to come :-(

PSS:  Thanks Peggi, for keeping things going! I’ll be back soon, I promise!!

Art imitating life?

Is it just me, or does this flower look like a quilt block?

wpid-wax-plant-2011-09-16-21-51.jpg

Huh.  Will you look at that.

wpid-7-sisters-2011-09-16-21-51.jpg

It’s a “Seven Sisters” block.  Might have to put this one on the bucket list, just because I love the plant so much!
