How to prepare a needle for hand sewing

By popular request!  Well, okay, maybe the requests only came from Cindi and my mom, but they still count, right?

Cindi wanted to know how I keep my needle from unthreading as I sew, and my mom wanted to know how I put the knot so close to the end of the thread.  Here’s a little video that shows how I accomplish both.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, for posting this, Peggi! At the Houston International Quilt Festival you showed me how to do this. I thought “Holy crap! This sure makes it easier!!” And then I promptly forgot how to do it as soon as I got home. Now you’ll always be right next to me, showing me how to do it!

  1. Thank you for sharing your method of needle preparation. I have never heard of putting your needle through the thread. After seeing your video, it makes so much sense, I wonder how I ever did it any other way.

  2. What a wonderful way to thread a needle. Who knew there was more than one way. I love your website. It’s so creative and helpful. Please keep up the great work and share your wonderful ideas and discoveries. I’m making one quilt now, have my next one planned, but the one after that is going to be your postage stamp. I’ll be glad to show and tell my work once it’s completed. I’m still new to all this, so don’t laugh at my seam lines too much. lol. Thanks again. Gregory Henry

  3. I am working on a project that requires a good amount of hand sewing, and my needle kept coming unthreaded! Very annoying. I also seemed to spend more time knotting the end of my thread then I wanted to. So I googled these issues, and up this popped! I can’t wait to try these methods. Thank you!
